Lessons With Leo
Lessons with Leo is a sort of docu-series recording my work with a single horse (Leo) and a young girl with autism. This series chronicles my adventures to develop a therapeutic riding strategy to help my daughter Kelly who struggles with the challenges of autism and catatonia. In these therapeutic riding sessions, I combine the principles of neuroscience and classical dressage training for the sole benefit of the rider by stimulating the brain to heal the mind and mend the body.
Although the therapeutic riding sessions are focused on the rider, you cannot heal a human rider without a strong and healthy horse. In separate training sessions, I also work to rehabilitate Leo, a 20 year old Off The Track Thoroughbred ex-race horse. Leo struggles with hip and hind leg joint issues that periodically come to the surface presenting as a mild lameness and possibly the beginning of sub-clinical arthritis.
A monthly subscription of $10 will give access to all the material inside the "Lessons With Leo" package including reviews of Kelly's Therapeutic Riding Sessions, summaries and videos of Leo's rehabilitation training, case studies, and more in depth information regarding the science and techniques being put into practice.
Join me as I work with Leo to increase his strength and resiliency while fighting against the ravages of age and time so he can help improve the quality of life and brain function for Kelly.
What Is Therapeutic Riding?
Therapeutic riding is not teaching disabled individuals how to ride.
Nor is it counseling on horseback.
Nor is it physical therapy on horseback.
Therapeutic riding is using the motion of the horse along with specific exercises to stimulate the rider's brain to heal the mind and mend the body.
Therapeutic riding works by triggering the brain's built in repair mechanism - called neuroplasticity - which then regulates and optimizes human physiology including muscle tone, hormone regulation, emotional balance, and other functions.
