The Old Riding School
The concept of going off to some form of equestrian boarding school has been around for centuries. During the Renaissance, riding schools began to emerge as formal institutions. The first notable riding school to teach dressage was established in the early 1500s by Federico Grisone, a Neapolitan nobleman. These early riding academies were primarily attended by young noblemen from across Europe, who sought to learn horsemanship as a part of their overall formal education. Riding schools evolved over time from a military foundation based on warfare tactics to a form of living art in which nobles could show off their skills in the saddle.
Modern lifestyle has largely made these types of riding schools obsolete. No longer do we need to concern ourselves over warfare tactics, nor do we need to go abroad to acquire specialized equestrian knowledge. However, the wealth of equestrian knowledge contained within the walls of these ancient hallowed institutions is at risk of being lost. Many aspects of the oral traditions from the Old Masters have already been lost and forgotten. In a modern world where horses no longer power the every day aspects of life, we modern riders should seek to preserve as much information as we can so that we can continue to improve the lives and welfare of the horses that we love.
The Modern Riding School
Since childhood, I have dreamed of being part of a grand riding school that follows the time tested principles and traditions of the Old School. However at this point in time, it is not possible to run a physical riding school to teach riders and train horses in person. However, the miracle of modern internet video conferencing technologies can support the existence of a remote riding school designed to share the knowledge of the Old School with modern riders and horse owners. With the aid of technology, my aim is to help riders and horses overcome their training struggles, make daily progress, reach their maximum athletic potential, and live a long, healthy, and full equestrian life.
All who are interested in transforming their riding and the lives of their horses are welcomed to join in this journey of equestrian education using remote learning technologies.
